THIBODAUX, LA –– On Monday, December 6, the Louisiana Assessors’ Association awarded the 2022 Assessor of the Year Award to Lafourche Parish Assessor, Wendy Thibodeaux. Each year, the association awards one assessor out of 64 statewide. Louisiana Assessors’ Association President and St. Charles Parish Assessor, Tab Troxler, presented Thibodeaux with the award. During his presentation, Troxler recognized Thibodeaux as the most deserving candidate because of her strong advocacy for Lafourche Parish residents. He said, “Without question Wendy Thibodeaux is the most deserving to be recognized as assessor of the year. She has been a strong advocate for the residents of Lafourche Parish. She was there for them in Hurricane Ida, donating her time to communities hardest impacted. She has proven herself to stand up for a fair and equitable tax system. She has been a tenacious leader and works closely with her colleagues to fend off unfair tax policies.” Assessor Thibodeaux said she was honored to receive an award that recognizes an assessor’s true mission and role in their respective communities. She said, “It’s been more than 25 years since I stepped into the Assessor’s Office with a passion to learn. Each day, I still wake up with that same passion and to serve the people of Lafourche as their Assessor.”
Assessor Wendy Thibodeaux was recently named one of The Bayou Industrial Group's 2022 B.I.G. Achievers.
A B.I.G Achiever is defined as “someone who, through their work and voluntary and philanthropic efforts, exemplifies BIG’s mission to grow and strengthen the Bayou Region.”
It was stated in her nomination that Assessor Thibodeaux has proven throughout her career, and most importantly throughout these last few, trying years, to always put the well-being and her love for Lafourche Parish and its residents at the forefront of her everyday actions.
Congratulations Assessor Wendy Thibodeaux and all 2022 B.I.G. Achievers!
Lafourche Parish Assessor Wendy Thibodeaux proudly introduces the public to an interactive geoportal mapping system for the entire parish.
This project begun several years ago when Assessor Thibodeaux hired one of the nations most highly regarded GIS companies to design and implement a geographic information system which can help the user find any parcel of land in the parish, identify ownership, and access the tax rolls which apply to that parcel.
Assessor Thibodeaux started with a blank canvas and decided how many parcels the budget allowed to be drawn annually. Thibodeaux states, "Now, we have a visual representation of the tax roll"
Assessor Thibodeaux states "You can now see who pays within those districts--who pays the school board, who pays the recreation district, and so on”
When asked about how the system will know of new construction in the parish, Thibodeaux said her office will rely on the parish’s permit office for updates, and pass that information on to mapping company.
Councilman Daniel Lorraine, who has had many issues with delays in getting condemned structures demolished in his district, was pleased with the possibilities of the new mapping system.
Oftentimes, ascertaining ownership of abandoned structures is the most difficult hurdle and one which causes the greatest delay in getting them cleared out.
“This should be an asset to identifying owners. This way, we can track them down,” said Lorraine.
Searches can be performed in numerous ways, including by assessment number, subdivision name, and physical address. A “measurement” function within the program allows the user to get distances and square footage of parcels.
Even oil wells are included in the map feature, with each well’s particular information attached.
The system can be accessed through the Lafourche assessor’s website—www.lpao.net—under the mapping tab.
